Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra

Committee

CUCO Committee 2008/9 Applications

President
James Brady (nominated by Rachel Stroud, seconded by Louisa Denby)
For me, CUCO is without doubt the best part of being at Cambridge.  Both the level of playing and the social atmosphere are unparalleled and I want to preserve these qualities while attracting a wider range of audiences.  At the moment, despite the hard work of the current and past committees, I feel that CUCO is not recognised either within or outside of Cambridge to a high enough degree.  Sophie (current president) has taken important steps to secure professional engagements outside of Cambridge and this should be continued, but in addition I want to increase and direct publicity and awareness within the town and the surrounding area.  I believe that relationships can be forged with other ensembles such as the Britten Sinfonia, thereby reaching their audience base, and that initiatives such as handing out flyers at concerts and sending email newsletters to colleges, schools and patrons of other concerts could attract larger audiences.  I would also like to explore ways of improving the benefits for CUMC members by inviting them to submit feedback.  Furthermore, I want to organise a sponsored tour to an arts/music festival such as Edinburgh, and see if this could become a regular fixture in the CUCO calendar.

CUMC President
Richard Godden (nominated by Peter Facer, seconded by Andrew Robertson)
Aim as President:
To restore CUMC to its position as the source of the highest quality music in the University.
Experience and Skills:
My dedication to CUMC has been demonstrated in my role as Junior Treasurer. I have gone over and above my duties in investigating and negotiating unpaid invoices of previous committees, saving CUMC over £1500.
I have significant previous experience of music management: in 2006 I founded a charity, Consonance Productions, to organise concert series’ in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival ranging from orchestral to chamber music. As Director I choose programmes, book venues, dates and musicians, manage all aspects of publicity (designing posters and the website), run the Friends scheme and chair meetings with the other trustees.
How I will achieve my aim:
A lack of awareness amongst the student body of the distinct identity of CUMC and its independence from CUMS is a problem I propose to solve. I will do this primarily through increasing publicity prior to concerts, through the website and at the Freshers Fair. I aim to increase the current number of non-playing student members tenfold (from 5 to 50) and increase benefits for current members by adding more chamber concerts and holding drinks receptions before concerts. I intend to register CUMC as a charity in order to improve fundraising opportunities.

Librarian
Alfredo Deano
I apply to the job of librarian as part of a general interest in orchestral music and the way it is distributed and used in concerts. At the same time, as a contribution to the orchestral committee, I consider it to be part of the responsibility and commitment that we all members of the orchestra have in order to make CUCO/CUMC concerts possible.
